Except maybe for the temperature control and the annoying menu, it’s extremely well built, it performs very good and it’s pretty reliable. And considering the price tag, it’s a good value for money box mod with some impressive positives.

Today we are going to look at one of the most impressive box mods that we’ve tested so far. We received the Smok XPro M80 Plus two weeks ago and we have been using the device for at least 1-2h each day since then. Besides its numerous features, it is a temperature control mod with a maximum power output of 80W that’s built to ensure one of the most amazing vaping experiences ever. From the lovely ‘high tech’ design to the quality of materials used, the M80 starts to amaze from the first time you hold it in your hand.
The Smok XPro M80 comes packed in a very qualitative black cardboard box covered by a white sleeve, and inside you will find the mod itself, an instructions manual, a micro USB cable and a 510 to eGO adapter. Looking at the device, it’s hard not to notice the superb finish, the small form factor and the build quality. Apparently the M80 is made from a combination of Zinc alloy and Aluminum alloy with high end precision and a super finish. It measures 85 x 55 x 22 mm, so it’s quite small and it weighs 175g so it’s perfectly balanced and a pleasure to vape on.
This mod comes in four metallic colors – Silver, Black, Grey, and Golden and it is powered by two internal 18650 batteries with a combined total power of 4,400 mAh, which is more than enough for any vaper – beginner or advanced. On the top side of the M80 you can notice the cap held in place by four Allan screws and the 510 connection located towards one of the sides. The connector is spring loaded so you don’t have to worry for any of your accessories not making full contact with the mod. The bottom plate is held in place with Allan screws and you get the micro USB charging port and some ventilation holes for the battery. To also help cool the device, on one side the design incorporates a radiator that dissipates some of the heat inside.
On the main side you can notice three round buttons (the firing button being a big larger than the two other adjustment ones), a display and a reset orifice. The OLED screen is pretty generous and well lit and it shows, depending on the mode, the current wattage, output voltage, atomizer resistance, and remaining battery. And speaking about modes, the Smok XPro M80 can work in wattage mode, temperature mod and mechanical mod.
In wattage mode, you can basically adjust the power from 6.0W all the way up to 80W in 0.1W increments and you can go through the values quite fast thanks to an accelerator. In temperature mode, you also set the wattage but to correspond or, in fact, not go over a certain temperature. In mechanical mode, the devices basically turns off its circuitry and feeds the power directly to the atomizer but with the benefit of the numerous built-in protections – so it’s not a true mechanical mode. You can also set an operating temperature from another sub-menu and the device will limit itself not to go over that value (you can set any number from 200 â°F up to 900 â°F in 10 â°F increments).
However, the thing you need to understand is that you can only get temperature control with Ni200 (Nickel) wire, but on the M80 it seems to ‘work’ with Kanthal as well. This is because it’s some sort of pseudo-temperature control – which means it doesn’t actually check out the wire but instead it uses some pre-defined settings for the temperature according to the atomizer resistance and wattage. So it’s more of a guess than an actual control. But it does work ok most of the time, as we noticed the vapor not getting hotter as we puffed on the device for a couple of seconds. The thing is, it doesn’t function in the same way as on a DNA 40 device. Another thing we didn’t like that much is the menu and the fact that you can scroll through the settings by only pressing a single button and having to pause in between to get to where you want.
But if we can draw a line, the Smok XPro M80 is a pretty successful mod, with all the necessary features to become a best-seller. Except maybe for the temperature control and the annoying menu, it’s extremely well built, it performs very good and it’s pretty reliable. And considering the price tag, it’s a good value for money box mod with some impressive positives.
