Ecigarettes demand a certain kind of etiquette

If something isn’t illegal it doesn’t mean it has to be forced on others, therefore let’s talk a bit about the etiquette appropriate for the Ecigarette user. Since most people are not yet accustomed to electronic cigarettes, you automatically become an ambassador for the device, especially to those who are seeing it for the first time in their lives. Most non-smokers tend to get irritated when they see someone blowing smoke of vapor next to them, even if there is no ban in the establishment.

EtiquetteWhile vaping isn’t the same as smoking, the public doesn’t always see it this way. There is much work to be done in educating people of the benefits and the environmentally safe nature of these devices but in many cases ecigs are commonly mistaken for real cigarettes due to the fact that they look very similar and some models even have LEDs at one end that light up every time you inhale. Therefore you, the vaper, must sometimes take matters into your own hands and explain to people what are these devices, how they work and why they are so different from the tobacco cigarettes.

The first rule is to always ask permission. If you are in a bar, restaurant or private establishment where smoking is not permitted it is probably a good idea to politely ask the person in charge for permission. Be prepared to hear a “no” but you could try again after you explain some of the differences and how the device actually works. If you don’t ask for permission and you are approached and asked to stop, the best thing to do is to cease your activity without any complaint.

The second rule is to use your discretion. This is what some ecig companies advice their customers to do when in public. Keep in mind that many might mistake the vapors for actual smoke and you don’t want to produce panic or start arguments in smoke-free places. Try not to draw any negative attention to yourself and stop your activity if you feel watched or pointed out by the people around you.

Third rule is to answer general questions. If you use your ecig in public, always be ready for questions because people are generally curious and this is a good chance to educate the general public. Try to take your time and answer all questions in a polite manner because you might help people switch to ecigarettes and chose the healthier alternative. Try to avoid jargon that some might find intimidating but rather use simple terms and explanations.

The last rule is to always respect others. Even though there is some research proving that exhaled ecigarette vapor is quite harmless that doesn’t mean you have to subject other people to it. You might find that adults accompanied by children are mostly irritated by people smoking or vaping. The smartest thing to do is to keep a respectable distance and if you are asked to stop using your device by the people sitting close to you, please do so immediately without complaint. Also keep in mind that you need to explain to your colleagues how these devices work before using them at the office.

Always remember that vaping is generally tolerated in many locations, but this could change dramatically if vapers tend to behave poorly.
